Optical Illusions by Antonius Driessens

Ton (Antonius) Driessens is a Dutch artist who lives and works in France, not far from Nîmes.
His trompe-l’oeil (literally: deceive the eye) objects are made of weathered, often centuries-old wood that comes from empty old castles. The objects suggest to be 3-dimensional, but are flat, so 2-dimensional.

Driessens compares wood with a human being. A living being and living material. Both stand the test of time but become scarred as time goes on. Scratches, deformations, cracks, scars can all be compared to our skin.

WonderWood presents Ton Driessens’ beautiful trompe-l’oeils at the art fairs KUNSTRAI (8-12 September) and PAN Amsterdam (13-21 November).
